Farida Gul Haroon, born in Peshawar, Pakistan, began drawing and painting at a very early age. Her first attempts at creating art was at about five years of age. Her mother bought her a 500 page sketchbook that Farida filled completely over the course of a year with her creations. She would also make dresses for her paper dolls that amused and delighted her elders. Always an excellent student, her notebooks were often shown to visitors due to her beautiful and precise handwriting and artistic drawings. Farida’s father, G. A. Gul, a producer, was one of the doyens of cinema in the Indian Subcontinent and a pioneer in introducing color movies to the region. An avowed perfectionist, he held his movies, studios and theaters to the highest standards. This approach to exploring new techniques and insisting on artistic integrity has influenced Farida’s work.  Her work in abstract and figurative painting speaks clearly on her commitment to creative principles.

Farida’s adherence to these standards can be seen in Gul Haroon’s work in miniature painting which is an art form that was patronized by the medieval ruling class, often depicting historic occasions and the courtly lifestyles of these rulers. In her own work as a student at Punjab University she learned techniques of preserving authentic original miniatures and then trained in drawing the jewelry worn by the subjects of these paintings with gold leaf and precious stone powders such as emeralds, pearls and rubies. This required an intricate technique, tremendous patience and a very steady hand. Each painting though only about five by five inches required two to three weeks to complete. The border of these paintings was about three inches wide and was also painted with the same intricate technique using a single haired sable brush.

After decades of being challenged as a female artist who was not permitted to express herself through her work, Farida Gul Haroon has progressively created 40 years of art work that she is now presenting to the world.  Farida is now exhibiting in the United States and currently resides and works in Coral Springs, FL.
